Mahrey Berthoud
Vocals, Fiddle and Bodhran
Mahrey has had a passionate love of music since childhood, inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of her mother, Scylla.
Mahrey started out with classical music before falling under the spell of traditional music in her 20’s – particularly that of Ireland, England and Scotland.
She has sung and played many different styles over the years with various different groups – including Scatter the Mud, with husband, Phil and John Brewins in Brighton. Their album Usquebaugh is highly regarded still. Mahrey also used to play with Phil in the Devon-based Amber Fire Ceilidh Band.
Mahrey is active on the South Devon music scene, teaching singing and fiddle playing at the local community college as well as performing and running courses. Mahrey’s lively fiddle playing and pounding bodhran rhythms are contrasted against her pure vocals. Mahrey and Phil also play together as Stringing Along, a duo that entertains at residential homes for the elderly.
As well as Rhillig's first album, 2020 also saw the release of The Thought Expressed, an album of Phil's music (based on the poetry of John Bradburne), sung by Mahrey.
